Lake Shikaribetsu

Lake ShikaribetsuLake Shikaribetsu ("Shikaribetsu-ko" in Japanese) is a freshwater lake located about 40 km north of Obihiro city.
It is located at the level of about 800 meters, and is the highest lake in Hokkaido.
It is about 98 meters deep, and it is about 4 km long from north to south and 1 to 2 km wide.

It is surrounded by the mountains as much as 1,000 meters high, and no private home is around this lake.
But at the southwestern lakeside, there is a hot spring resort with two hotels.
This lake is in the Daisetsuzan National Park, so we can see only the buildings of these hotels.

The visitors enjoy outdoor activities in summer and the beautiful colored leaves in autumn.
From December to next May, this lake freezes over.
Then from January to March, the village of igloos (houses made of ice blocks) "Shikaribetsu-ko kotan" is opened on the flozen lake.
In the village, there are a outdoor hot spring bath and a bar.

There are two small lakes near this lake.
Lake Shinonome is located southeast, and Lake Komadome is located southwest.

How to get to here

By route bus

From Obihiro station, it takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

By car

About 60 km from Obihiro. It takes about 1 hours and 20 minutes.
