Furano city

Map of FuranoFurano Furano is a small city located 50 km south of Asahikawa city, and is also located 25 km south of Biei town.

Furano area is not only Furano city, but there are Naka-furano town and Kami-furano town between Furano city and Biei town.

It is well-known as an area with lavender fields. Additionally for Japanese people, Furano city is known as a location of the popular TV drama "From a northern land" broadcasted from 1983 to 2002.
Main sightseeing spots are related to these.

Agriculture is the main industry, so principal products in this area are onion, carrot and melon.
Because the climate of Furano is similar to Provence in southern France, wine and cheese are also producted.

The best time to view lavender flowers is from mid-July to the end of July in Furano area.

Furano city

  • Furano ski resort /1/ : It is located 3 km west of JR Furano station.
    It is one of the biggest ski resorts in Japan, and has ever held the alpine skiing of World Cup.
    Recently the foreign skiers are increasing, and especially this is popular with Australians.
  • Ningle terrace /2/ : It is a unique village of souvenir shops for tourists. All shops are log cabin-style, and are scattered about in the forest near the Shin-Furano Prince Hotel, which is one of the main hotels in Furano ski resort.
  • Highland Furano /3/  : It is a hotel located 6 km northwest of Furano station.
    It is located in wide forest and lavender field, and is one of the spots to view lavender flowers in Furano area.
    We can stay here, and have a bath in the hot spring with viewing beautiful lavender flowers.
  • Rokugou-no-mori /4/ : It is located 15 km east of central Furano, and was the location of the popular TV drama "From a northern land".
    As it was the popular drama, this area has become one of the most popular spots for Japanese tourists.
    Within a range of about 1 km in the forest, there are a few houses used in the drama.
    Additionally, there is the "Furano jam factory" in this area.
    By route bus, it takes about 40 minutes from JR Furano station.

Naka-furano town

  • Farm Tomita /11/ : It is a private farm located 2 km north of JR Naka-furano station.
    It is one of the most famous lavender flower farm in Furano area, and many tourists visit here.
    We can see the beautiful lavender flowers and other colorful flowers.
  • Naka-furano municipal lavender farm /12/ : It is a municipal lavender farm located on just north of Naka-furano station.
    It is on a slope of a hill, and we can go up to the top with lift. From the observatory, we see the lavender flowers and the wide view of Furano basin.
  • Saika-no-sato /13/ : It is a privete farm located 1 km west of Naka-furano station.
    It is the widest lavender farm around this area, and is getting popular these days.

Kami-furano town

  • Hinode Park /21/ : It is a park located 1 km east of Kami-furano station.
    It is a hill, and is covered with lavender fields. There is an observatory on the top.
    On the third holidays in July, the lavender festival is held here.
  • Flower Land Kami-furano /22/ : It is a flower park located 4 km north of Kami-furano station.
    There are many kinds of flowers such as not only lavender but also poppy, sunflower, lily and so on.
    We can look around the park on a tractor-bus.
  • Miyama pass /23/ : It is a small pass on Route 237.
    It is easy to get around here and we have a good view, so most tourist visit here.
    Around here, there are a few spots such as "Trick art museum", "Teddy Bear museum" and "Kan'no farm" with lavender fields.

How to get to here

By airplane

  1. By airplane, from each airport to Asahikawa Airport.
    (For example, it takes 1 hour and 40minutes from Haneda (Tokyo) and 1 hour and 55 minutes from Kansai or Itami (Osaka).)
  2. Then by route bus, from the airport to Furano Station, it takes just 1 hour.

By railroad

  • From Asahikawa, by local train of JR Furano line, it takes 1 hour and 13 minutes.
  • From Biei, by local train of JR Furano line, it takes about 40 minutes.
  • From Sapporo, first by limited express on Hakodate line to Takikawa station, it takes about 50 minutes.
    Then transfer at there to the local train on Nemuro line, and it takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes to Furano.
    Every summer, extra express trains are provided between Sapporo and Furano. It takes about 2 hours.

By route bus

  • From JR Asahikawa station, it takes 1 hour and 35 minutes.
  • From JR Biei station, it takes 44 minutes.

How to tour around Furano

  • By rental bicycle : There are a few rental shops around Furano station. It is the best method for touring around Furano station.
  • By car : You can tour effectively. But you may get involved in a traffic jam in season.
  • By "Twinkle bus" : This is the sightseeing bus for only JR passengers to Furano station. You can see the spot of Rokugo-no-mori in a short period of time.
  • By sightseeing taxi : The taxi driver leads you some spots. The following has an English website.
