Railroad network in Kobe

Map of railroads in Kobe Central Kobe spreads along the coast from east to west.
Because Rokkou mountains are just north of the city, and the main area is on the slope.

So most of the railroad lines run from east to west.
And some railroads operate many trains frequently.
It is very convenient not only to tour around Kobe but also to move to Osaka or Himeji.

The central station is San'nomiya, and many lines connect there.
Kobe station on JR has the name of city, but it is at the west end of central Kobe.

Shinkansen

Shin-Kobe station is located about 2 km north of San'nomiya.
Subway or route bus leads to San'nomiya.
The station is in the narrow gap of the valley in Rokkou mountains. So, there are very long tunnels on the both of east and west sides of this station.
All trains stop here, and it takes about 13 minutes from Shin-Osaka and about 30 minutes from Kyoto.

In addition, the formal name of the line is "San'yo Shinkansen".
"Tokaido Shinkansen" is between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, and "San'yo Shinkansen" is between Shin-Osaka and Hakata.
But many trains run through both lines.

JR Line

JR Line runs through the central area of Kobe from east to west.
In the central area, it has the stations of Nada, San'nomiya, Motomachi and Kobe.
This line is quadruple track, and rapid train and local train run on separate tracks.
So both lines operate many trains frequently.
And rapid train has two type. One is ordinary train, and the other is the train which stops only main stations like limited express.
From Osaka to San'nomiya, it takes about 22 minutes by the fastest rapid train, about 32 minutes by ordinary rapid train, and about 37 minutes by local train.

Kobe Rapid Transit Railway (Kobe Kosoku Line)

In Japanese, it is "Kobe Kosoku Tetsudou" (or "Kobe Kosoku Line").
It is like a subway of Kobe.
To central Kobe, the lines of four railroad companies come.
All of these lines are connected with this Kobe Rapid Transit Railway. (On above map, it is the red line.)
From Osaka, Hankyu Line and Hanshin Line are connected.
From Akashi or Himeji, San'yo Dentetsu Line is connected.
And from Arima-onsen, Sanda or Miki, Kobe Dentetsu Line is connected.
Most of the line is under ground like subway, and many trains run into the other company's line each other.

Subway

The formal name is "Kobe Municipal Subway".
There are two lines.
Seishin-Yamate Line runs through Shin-Kobe and San'nomiya. It runs mainly on the north side of JR Line.
Kaigan Line runs from San'nomiya-Hanadokeimae through Harborland. It runs mainly on the south side of JR Line.

Kobe Rapid Transit Railway

It is an automated guideway transit (AGT) systems, and two lines are operated.
"Portliner" is the line connecting between San'nomiya and Kobe Airport. On the way, it runs through ort Island.
"Rokkoliner" is the line connecting between Sumiyoshi station on JR Line and Rokko Island.
