Nishin Goten means "mansion by herring", and is located about 5 km north of central Otaru city.
It is built near a cape facing the Ishikari Bay.

It is the mansion and workplace for fishing which was built by fishermen made fortune by herring fishing.

Several Nishin Goten were built along the coast of the Sea of Japan from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
They are luxury wooden architectures, which displayed wealth of the owner.

This mansion was built by then wealthy fisherman Tanaka Fukumatsu in 1897.
It is the largest building in existence.

In the building, many articles for fishing, livingware and photos at that time are displayed.

How to get here

About 25 minutes by route bus from JR Otaru station.
Get off at "Shukutsu" stop.
Then, about 5 minutes walk to the mansion.
