Sandankyo is a gorge formed by Shibaki River and its tributary, Yokogo River.

It is in located about 50 km northwest of Hiroshima city.
And it is about 10 km northwest of Ini rice terrace.

Shibaki River is a tributary of Ota River flowing through the center of Hiroshima city, and Sandankyo is loceted in the upper reaches of the river.

The river have eroded the bedrock deeply, so there are many steep rocky cliffs and waterfalls.

It is about 12 km from the entrance place to the most upstream part where there is the man-made lake named Lake Hijiri created by Tarutoko Dam.

There is the place where Shibaki River and Yokogo River meet at the midpoint, and is called Mizunashi-guchi.
The section of Yokogo River about 2 km long is also included in Sandankyo.

A walking trail is set up along the river.
It is closed to cars and bicycles.

The first spot from the entrance is Nagabuchi (長淵).
It is the longest part with slow stream and the water is very clear.

At Tatsunokuchi (竜ノ口), the river runs rapidly meandering through big rocks.

Kurobuchi (黒淵) is a popular scenic spot and is about 3 km from the entrance.
The clear river flows slowly and the rocky cliffs surrounded by primeval forest rise sheer from the water.

From the middle of April to late November, boat tour of Kurobuchi is operated.
There is a rest house at the turn-around point.

Nidan-taki in Sandankyo

Sarutobi (猿飛) is a slow stream of Yokogo River through rocky cliffs rising sheer, and is about 7.5 km from the entrance.

Boat tour of Sarutobi is operated to Nidan-taki (二段滝).
Nidan-taki is a waterfall about 15 meters high and the width is about 3 meters.

Mitsudaki in Sandankyo

Sandan-taki (三段滝) is a three-stage waterfall in Shibaki River and the height is about 30 meters.
It is about 7.5 km from the entrance.

Ryumon (竜門) is a narrow gorge and Mitsudaki (三ツ滝) falls.
Mitsudaki is also a three-stage waterfall and the height is about 31 meters.
It is about 200 meters from Lake Hijiri.

How to get here

By streetcar with route No. 1, 2 or 6, about 12 minutes from Hiroshima station to Kamiyacho-higashi stop.

Near the stop, there is Hiroshima Bus Center, and get on the express bus for Sandankyo.
Then get off at Togouchi-IC Bus Center stop.

From the bus stop to Ini, the distance is about 3 km.
Because of mounrain road, it is good to use a taxi.
