Beach of Jodogahama
Jodogahama is one of most popular beaches in this area.
It is located 3 km east of the center of Miyako city.
In Japanese, the first "o" in the word is pronounced long, and it is read as "Jôdogahama".
A small rocky peninsula about 700 meters long extends into the sea, and a beautiful beach spreads along the inlet behind the peninsula.
It looks like a Japanese garden.
"Jodo" means "Pure Land where Buddha lives" and "hama" means "beach".
("Ga" between these words is a particle meaning "of".)
It is said that a Buddhist priest saw this beautiful scenery and he named this beach "Jodogahama" in the 17th century.
